Inspirated by a damaged and fading image that provided fresh insight into the tale of her Italian immigrant family's struggle to integrate into American society, Patricia Klindienst traveled across the nation to write this book. She gathered the accounts of urban, suburban, and rural gardens made by people who are rarely featured in books about American gardens, such as Native Americans, immigrants from Asia and Europe, and ethnic groups who were present in these parts long before our country's borders were established. Examples of these groups include Hispanics in the Southwest, whose ancestors followed the Conquistadors into the Rio Grande Valley, and Gullah gardeners of the Sea Islands off the coast of South Carolina, descendants of Africans.
