Any campaign for positive change has always depended on food and still does.
Food has supported advocates in their fight for change for centuries, from home cooks and expert chefs to neighborhood restaurants and bakeries. Civil rights activists could find safety and comfort cuisine at Atlanta's Paschal's restaurant. In the 1960s, Elijah Muhammad and the Nation of Islam ran their own bakeries, ranches, and fields. During the March on Washington, "The Sandwich Brigade" coordinated attempts to serve thousands of people. Along with treasured recipes from the time, author Fred Opie describes how southern cuisine fueled the struggle for independence.
