Pain is what? An unpleasant sensory and emotional experience connected to actual or potential tissue damage, or described in terms of such damage, according to the International Association for the Study of Pain.
The distinction between acute and chronic pain, which are the two most common types of pain, is useful.
The majority of the time, disease, inflammation, or tissue damage is the cause of acute pain. Anxiety or emotional distress may accompany this type of pain, which typically appears suddenly, for instance after trauma or surgery. Acute pain typically has a treatable cause and is self-limiting, meaning that it lasts only for a certain amount of time and is only of a certain intensity. It can become chronic in a few uncommon circumstances.
Many people think that chronic pain is a disease in and of itself. Environmental and psychological factors have the potential to significantly worsen it. Compared to acute pain, chronic pain lasts longer and is more difficult to treat with conventional medicine. It can and frequently does result in serious issues for the patients.
A person may have two or more chronic pain conditions that coexist. These ailments can include vulvodynia, endometriosis, fibromyalgia, inflammatory bowel disease, interstitial cystitis, chronic fatigue syndrome, and fibromyalgia. If there is a common cause for these disorders, it is unknown.
